Mamak - Authentic Malaysian

I finally tried Mamak a few nights ago with a group of friends. I've walked and driven past for a while and have always seen a queue out the door and down the road and I've always wondered what the fuss was about?

There are a few other Malaysian restaurants in Chinatown, so this one has got to be doing something right.

We arrived at 6.30 pm on the dot and as we walked up the line was already about 15 people deep and the inside was full. A staff member came out jot down how many we had in our group. We had a table for 7 and had to wait around 15 minutes.

I loved how at the window you could see the guys prepare the roti, I wanted to take a photo, shame that I didn't, I was afraid I'd look like the hungry stalker girl from the street.

First thing I noticed once we got inside was the aroma, it smelt so damn yummy.

and as always with a large group of friends, it's better to get various dishes to share!

Kari Kambing Lamb Curry $16

Kacang panjang belacan Stir Fry long beans with chilli $14

Mee Goreng Fried Noodles $11.50

Sambal Udang Chilli Prawns $19

We also got some Roti Canai $5.50, Roti Planta $6.50 and Lamb Murtabak $11.50.

I didn't get the chance to get photos of the above as they were dropped off at the boys end of the table!

The service was impressive, efficient and friendly. The food was tasty and reasonably priced.

The only thing I didn't like was how noisy it was, I couldn't even hear my friend opposite me, we seriously had to shout, it was that loud in there. I didn't even bother trying to talk to D at the other end of the table.

Overall I liked it. I think I'll be taking my Mum with me next time, I'm sure she'll like it too.

  1. Hehee... Mamaks where they came from is a place where friends meet and chatter about nothings and everythings. IT is bound to get noisy, but because they are usually out in the cool open night air of Malaysian nights, it never gets that crazy like the atmosphere you described in the one they've recreated in Sydney. The food is quite authentic huh? I am not sure if I'd bother queuing up though.

    1. I didn't know what Mamak meant, I thought it was like Amak (mother) in Indonesian?? Slightly different eh?
The food is very good and I loved how they weren't shy with the chilli. Only ended up being about $20 per head!

  4. Yum! I've been there once as I was curious to see what the fuss was all about.
The food is pretty cheap and the Roti is so good, my fave was the Mee Goreng :)

  5. If you go to the one in Chatswood it is less noisy and has less of a queue (you still need to queue past 6.15pm usually though). Did you try any of the desserts? I love the roti pisang!
